“What Cole?”

“That somehow we were able to get your glasses fixed without you getting in trouble with Dad and Mom.”

I get up and give my little brother a hug.

“Well, I hope that somehow your prayers are answered.”

Chapter 11

The Plan

The first person I see when I get to school the next morning is Chloe.

“We’ve got to stop Lanie from bullying everybody,” I say.

“I agree with you, but how?”

“We could tell one of our teachers, or the principal,” suggests Mariama, walking up and joining us.

“But then all the other kids will say that we’re tattletales,” Chloe says. “Nobody would trust us with any secrets or want to be our friend.”

“I think I have a plan,” I interrupt, and tell them what I think.

They both listen and shake their heads in agreement.

After second period I rush to Nathan Jones’ locker.

When he sees me, he frowns.

“What are you doing here?” he asks suspiciously.

Since I beat him in the regional spelling bee last year, Nathan and I haven’t spoken. I guess he’s embarrassed because he teased me so much while we were studying. After I won, I felt bad for Nathan because his Dad yelled at him. But I still think he’s goofy.

“I see that you and Lanie Mitchell are really good friends,” I say.

“Yeah, what about it?” he growls.

“Does your dad know how many Fun Plex tokens you give her a week?”

“I didn’t give her anything.”

“Well, how come I saw you handing her about twenty tokens on Monday morning?”

He stares at me angrily.

“Listen Nathan, I’m not trying to make any trouble for you,” I say. “I’m just trying to stop Lanie from bullying people. And I have a plan.”

I share my idea with him.

Nathan thinks for a minute, then slowly nods his head and grins.

“That just might work!”

He makes sure Lanie is not around, then hurries down the hall to tell the Gibson twins.

First thing Thursday morning, Nathan, the twins, Chloe, Mariama, and I all gather at my locket.

Okay everybody, here’s the plan. The twins are going to pretend they are videotaping Lanie taking my money as a joke,” I say, “but then we tell her if she doesn’t stop bullying us, we’re putting the video on the Internet. That should scare her enough to leave us alone. We won’t need to tell our teachers and parents, but we will always have the video to use as a threat.”

“I think that might work,” says Carlton. “She’ll never suspect we’re working together.”

“Yeah, Nathan always talks about how he wants to get back at Sophie,” Carly adds, “and makes fun of Chloe ‘cause she’s dyslexic and can’t spell.”

Chloe frowns and balls up her fists.

“Let’s separate before Lanie gets here,” Nathan says, trying to change the subject.

He looks down the hall. “She’s out of game tokens, so I know she’ll come by my locker as soon as she comes in.”

“Okay, we’ll meet you at the locker in a few minutes and give Lanie the idea about beating up Sophie on video,” say the twins.
